Field Test | 100mm F4.0 HD MWIR Fixed Focal Athermal Lens: Clear Night Imaging, No Narcissus Interference

11 Jun,2026

Recently, we conducted an outdoor night field test with the 100mm F4.0 HD MWIR fixed focal athermal lens. Covering the 3μm–5μm mid-wave infrared band, this lens features a fixed focal length of 100mm and an F4.0 aperture. With its lightweight and compact design (≤160g), it delivers high-resolution athermal imaging. The test focused on two typical scenarios—a nighttime lake surface and an urban elevated highway—highlighting two core advantages.

Clear Imaging: Detailed Visibility in Low-Light Conditions

In the video, the lens is aimed at a distant lake at night. The silhouette of a motorcyclist by the lakeside is clearly distinguishable, water ripples on the lake surface are well-defined, and the forms of waterfowl resting on the water are fully visible. From the near shore to the distant water, the entire frame remains free of blur and noise accumulation. Infrared imaging in low-light conditions remains sharp and clean.

The second video targets a distant elevated highway. At night, heavy traffic flows continuously on the bridge. Vehicle contours and motion trajectories are smooth and clear, while lane markings and bridge structures remain stable and identifiable. In its fixed focal length operating state, the lens demonstrates excellent resolution and thermal stability, meeting the demands of nighttime urban surveillance and long-range observation.

No Significant Narcissus: Clean Images Without Ghosting Interference

Narcissus is a common imaging artifact in infrared lenses at night or in environments with significant temperature differences, often appearing as dark or bright spots generated by the lens's own cold optical elements. This lens effectively suppresses narcissus through optimized optical design and coating processes. In both test videos—whether the low-background lake scene or the complex lighting environment of the elevated highway—no visible narcissus ghosting appears. The images are transparent and clean, significantly reducing the burden on post-processing.

Compact and Lightweight Design: Compatible with Multiple Platforms

The lens features an athermal optical design, maintaining focus stability across a wide temperature range of -40°C to +60°C without the need for additional refocusing. The total optical length is 85mm, with external dimensions of Φ80mm × 51.8mm. The total unit weight does not exceed 160g, and the focus range extends from 2m to infinity. The front surface is coated with an anti-reflection coating, with a hard carbon coating optionally available for enhanced surface durability in field environments. The protection rating is IP67 (front element only). The lens is suitable for UAV payloads, vehicle-mounted electro-optical pods, remote fixed surveillance, and portable handheld observation devices.

Moving forward, Wh-Clear will continue to conduct and release more real-scene performance demonstrations, focusing on the forefront of advanced optical technology, increasing R&D investment, deepening technology translation, and continuously launching more competitive optical products in the infrared, visible light, laser, and other fields.
